Earlier this year, word broke that HBO had put a trio of new Game of Thrones projects into development: 9 Voyages / Sea Snake, Flea Bottom, and 10,000 Ships. One of those shows has now obtained its writer: Deadline reports that the network has hired Amanda Segel, writer and producer for shows like Person of Interest, Helstrom, and Shooter to write the project.

The project is part of HBO’s larger expansion into George R.R. Martin’s world of Westeros, and will join Game of Thrones and the forthcoming House of the Dragon (which is currently in production). The series is apparently about the adventures of Rhoynarian Princess Nymeria and the flight of her people to Dorne after a devastating defeat during the Second Spice War—about a thousand years before the events of Game of Thrones. The story has been referenced in a bunch of Martin’s novels, as well as in his book The World of Ice & Fire.

Segel has worked on a number of genre projects over the years, ranging from an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist, Nikita, Person of Interest, and Helstrom, on which she served as a writer and producer.

HBO has been working hard to expand its Westeros franchise ever since Game of Thrones came to an end in 2019. It put a handful of projects into development, including The Long Night from writer Jane Goldman (which would have taken place 10,000 years before GOT, but didn’t make it past the pilot stage) and greenlit another series, House of the Dragon.

Since then, it’s been looking for what else might stick: adaptations of Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories, an animated series, and the aforementioned 9 Voyages / Sea Snake, Flea Bottom, and 10,000 Ships. While Game of Thrones ended on a divisive note, HBO (and its parent company, WarnerMedia) is clearly betting on many of those fans tuning in to return to Westeros somewhere down the road when these projects (or other, unannounced ones) eventually end up debuting.
